excerpt
“You really should change that light bulb,” Matt said, glancing around us.
“I know.” I pushed aside my wallet to dig to the bottom of my oversized purse. “I kind of take for granted that this is supposed to be a safe neighborhood.”
“Until an alien abducts you off your poorly lit porch.”
“Very funny.” I glanced up from my purse with a smile. “But really, it’s late. You could have been home by now.”
“Gen, I’m glad to walk you to your door. I would have worried about you if I hadn’t.”
I considered him as we stood there on my porch, the light flickering above us. I didn’t want him to leave, but I didn’t know how to ask him to stay. Maybe I could ask him in for a drink, though I’d already had enough.
But I have those cupcakes…
Yeah. I could offer him cupcakes. They weren’t his favorite, chocolate with sprinkles, but yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting had to be a close second, right? Hadn’t he said a cupcake will fix everything?
“I’m really glad we went out tonight.” His voice made me jump and I dropped the keys. We both bent to pick them up at the same time and bumped foreheads.
“Sorry,” he said.
“It’s okay, I’m fine.” I clasped my forehead and laughed. Probably, I sounded hysterical. Like a rabid hyena. I couldn’t even look him in the eye when I took the keys from him. “Thanks for inviting me. I had a lot of fun tonight.”
“Me too,” he said.
I put the key into the lock, turning it slowly as I struggled with what to do about him and my out of control libido. Unlocking my door hadn’t given me enough time to figure things out, though, so I tried to prolong sliding the patio door open. That didn’t take long either, and I hesitated in the doorway, still unsure. I opened my mouth to ask him in, but nothing came out. So I stepped backward through the doorway, my gaze glued to his. After a moment, he followed me inside, part of his face lost in shadows.
Time stood still. My tongue darted out to lick my lips, and I lifted up onto my toes as he lowered his head to meet me halfway. The smell of his cologne surrounded me and my eyes drifted shut. He grasped me loosely around my back, pulling me close, sending shivers coursing through my body. His breath caressed my skin, his lips just a whisper away from mine, and my lips parted…

excerpt
“Damn it, Lex, you keep pushing me away and it’s pissing me off.” He ran his hands through his hair. “I’m not going to fight over you with some guy who’s already gone.”
“Me pushing you away has nothing to do with Jeremy,” I said and crossed my arms. What I didn’t say was that it had everything to do with Leo, with our past, with me not wanting to get my heart broken again. Why couldn’t he understand that? Why couldn’t he read my mind and know all the questions I had about why he’d broken up with me the way he had, and why he was suddenly here, again, in my life, torturing me with feelings I didn’t want to have. Feelings that scared the hell out of me?
His face lowered, and suddenly his lips were near my ear lobe. I sucked in a breath. “Did he make you feel like this?” he whispered, and then his lips pressed softly against the sensitive skin of my neck. “Or this?” His lips captured my earlobe, a flicker of wet heat, and then it was gone, replaced by a draft of cold air seeping through the crack under the door. “Or this.”
His lips captured mine and stars exploded behind my closed eyes. Everything was warm, my entire body weightless and fuzzy. The kiss was slow; the heat of it felt all the way down to my toes. His tongue slid against mine in a silken kiss of passion that erupted inside of me.

Sixteen Candles

One of my favorite Romantic Comedy movies!!!

I love romantic comedy. Movies, books, you name it, this girl wants to read it, to watch it, to lose myself in all it’s silliness, the butterflies in the tummy, breathless first kisses, the laughter, the drama—I love, love, love it. I suppose you can see why I choose to write humorous contemporary romance . I just can’t get enough of it!

clip_image001http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088128/

One of my favorite romantic comedies is 16 Candles. I remember when I was a kid I wanted to be just like Samantha when I grew up. Ha! I was also going to score me a totally hot boyfriend who looked just like Jake-y. My high school days would be filled with romance and drama and I was going to end up sitting Indian-style on a glass coffee table across from my Jake-y on my 16th birthday. There was no other way life could possibly turn out. Nope.

Of course, my life didn't quite play out that way. Not only did my hair not turn red, but I didn’t get freckles, either. And, since I have dark black hair and naturally tan skin (I’m half Filipino, half Polish, what-a mix!) I’ll never be able to color my hair red. I would look ridiculous as a redhead. However, I did fall in love with a dark haired hunk who I met in high school. Unfortunately, he was kinda already taken so I spent most of my high school years daydreaming about him. So no, I didn’t end up Indian-style on a glass coffee table with him on my 16th birthday, but been lucky enough to spend every birthday since my 22nd birthday with him. I'd say that’s pretty good :)

Though I can't ever be and won't ever be a redhead, in my romantic comedy, Fender Bender Blues , the female protagonist, Rach, is a sassy REDHEAD who doesn't drive so well :)

So I'm curious, were you as obsessed with 16 Candles as I was? Did you swear to your best friends, your journal, to your reflection in the mirror that your first romance would be just like in the movie? And if 16 Candles isn’t your favorite romantic comedy flick, what is?

Thanks for having me today!

about the author
clip_image037
Niecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life, and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half-naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.
Most days she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.
Niecey is the author of Fender Bender Blues, a contemporary romantic comedy published by The Wild Rose Press. Her new romantic comedy series, What’s Love??? includes Another Shot At Love, and Done With Love releasing April 2014.

Chronicles of the Uprising

Part 2

K.A. Salidas

Release Date: April 14, 2014

Book Description:

Narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Magistrate, Mira travels west, toward the coast. With three weakened human fugitives accompanying her, she searches for the mythical land of Sanctuary.

After encountering a pack of wolf shifters, headed by the charismatic—and brazen—Stryker, Mira learns that Sanctuary is real after all. Caldera Grove: home of the Otherkin. Hidden in the mouth of a dormant volcano, it has protected its residents from humans since the early days following the great cataclysm. For Mira— a vampire— Caldera Grove is a land of peace; an escape from the relentless persecution of the humans who once enslaved her, and an end to the daily struggle and bloodshed of being a gladiator.

For the humans accompanying her, Caldera Grove means death. Humans, greedy and untrustworthy creatures, are destroyed before they can penetrate its borders.

To plead her case for entry into Caldera, Mira must abandon her companions, albeit temporarily, and follow Stryker into the heart of the city. What she finds within Caldera Grove presents her with an unenviable decision between her own desires for freedom and peace, or honor and the human companions who risked it all for her.

Excerpt

A lone naked man appeared from behind some large boulders and walked unabashedly toward her.

She might have been a warrior and no stranger to the sight of a naked man, but to have it so proudly displayed in front of her was hard to ignore. A smile crept across her face against her best intentions to hold it back. Hello, Wolfman!

The man, this wolf, was more than a treat to the eyes. Sun-bleached waves of golden hair framed a wide chiseled face. A light dusting of that same golden hair spread across his jaw and cheeks, giving him a wild and rugged look that Mira couldn’t help but find utterly appealing. As handsome as his face was, it was only the tip of the iceberg. Even in the moonlit glow, it was obvious that his body was just as sun-kissed as his hair. He was pure toned muscle and firmness that was obviously not the result of hours in the training gym. He lacked the bulk and hard lines that came from intense training; instead, his was all natural, long and lean. A physique that screamed freedom. Mira could imagine long hours spent running through the forests, not to escape but just to enjoy the wind through his hair and the thrill of the hunt.

“If you’re done drooling, would you mind telling me what you are doing out here” – the man sniffed at the air and immediately zeroed in on the vehicle Mira was standing in front of – “with three humans.”

“Drooling?” Arrogance was not a trait Mira enjoyed, but she couldn’t honestly admit that she hadn’t been appreciating his naked form. “No,” she lied. “Just shocked. I didn’t expect… well… Never mind. My name is Mira. I’m a…”

“I know what you are. I want to know why you’re here.” There was no good nature in his tone, and his body language said he was ready for a fight. Tight fists and twitchy muscles were never a good sign. Mira had had enough of fighting with her own kind in the last thirty-odd years; she’d rather not have to take on a wolf now. Her hopes of peace and sanctuary were already beginning to wane.

Opting for the diplomatic approach, Mira held her hands out to show she was unarmed. She took a deep calming breath and spoke slow and clear. “We seek Sanctuary. These humans are my companions. They helped me to escape from New Haven City, behind the Iron Gate. It’s possible we’re still being pursued, and we beg your mercy to allow us inside.”

His narrowed eyes flitted from Mira to the others cowering behind her. “Show yourselves,” he demanded. “Throw down any weapons and show me your hands.”

Lucian, Curtis, and Sarah stepped out from behind Mira’s shadow but did not walk forward. As ordered, they all held up their hands in surrender.

“We come in peace,” Mira said, still holding her tone low and calm. “These are my…” she was at a loss as to how to describe them. She knew the word she should say, but somehow found it hard to push past her lips. “They’ve taken care of me. Helped me to escape at great personal expense to themselves. They will be killed if they return to their city.”

“They will be dinner if they enter Sanctuary.” A smile broke the scowl across the wolfman’s face, but it was not friendly. He snapped his jaw and mock-lunged at Lucian. “My kind would eat them alive.”

Meet Mira

The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost.

But not all survivors were human.

In the dark, militant society that rose in the aftermath, vampires, once thought to be mythical, have been assimilated and enslaved. Used for blood sport their lives are allowed to continue only for the entertainment of the masses. Reviled as savages, they are destined to serve out their immortal lives in the arena, as gladiators.

And there is no greater gladiator than Mira: undefeated, uncompromising...and seemingly unbreakable. Short, dark hair, and a wit as sharp as the sword she chooses as her weapon, this vampire is not one to be trifled with. And knowing it, she regularly test her limits with both her own vampire kind and the humans who “claim” to own her.

After thirty years in an underground prison, only let out of her cell to fight and kill her own kind in the public arena for the amusement of the humans… you might say she’s got a few issues to overcome. But, though she’s been mistreated for the entirety of her life as a vampire, she never let her misfortune dampen her spirit. Honing her skills in the arena, she’s one hell of a fighter, and can endure pains that would put lesser vampires on their knees. Rather than break her spirit, she’s used her torment to fortify it.

In Dissension she found more than just physical strength. Forging a bond with a special human, Lucian, and Elite, her sworn enemy, Mira helped to sow the seeds of war and escaped the bonds of her captivity.

Now, in Complication, Mira’s bond with her human companion is tested yet again. Strength is not enough to overcome the odds this time, and Mira will have to learn the true meaning of honor if she hopes to finally find peace.

About The Author

clip_image004

Endowed with special powers and abilities, beyond those of mortal women, I can get the munchkin off to gymnastics, cheerleading, Girl Scouts, and swim lessons. I can put hot food on the table for dinner while assisting with homework, baths, and bedtime… And, I still find time to keep the hubby happy (nudge nudge wink wink). I can do all of this and still have time to write my novels.

Sorry… I can’t even write that with a straight face.

Lies all lies.

Here’s the reality. I’m a sleep-deprived, overworked, mom who just doesn’t know the meaning of the word balance. I try so hard to do it all, (be super mom, wife, & author) and at the end of the day I fall face forward into the couch.

Yes, you read that right, I tend to sleep on the couch. It’s a point of frustration for my hubby and a thing of comedy for my daughter. Imagine waking up to your little child yelling, “Mom slept on the couch again!!!”

Because being supermom (or trying to) means a lot of time devoted to family, writing is often done when said family is peacefully snoozing away. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen asleep with my laptop, on the couch. It just happens. Then, bright and early at 7am either my hubby (on his way to work) or my daughter (getting ready for school) wakes me up.

Writing is my passion. It’s a part of me. More than just a hobby, it’s a compulsion. I have to do it. If I don’t do at least one writing related thing each day I get cranky.

Hopefully, my passion can be your entertainment!

Guest Author Leah DW - From South Africa with love

Untour1

Today on the blog I have fellow South African author Leah DW. As South African Authors, we get to experience things a little different then our American of Euro peers. As far as I could find, Leah and I are the only Paranormal authors in South Africa, yes it’s that epic. Today, Leah will be sharing with you our ups and our downs all the way from South Africa.

From South Africa with love

Being a South African author with an international publisher has its ups and downs. I never thought I would actually publish my work at first. Here in SA it is hard to get the paranormal genre out there so I decided to either find an international publisher or be an indie author. Fans of this genre are more in America and such, not here.

This was one of the downs. I couldn’t be an indie author because of financial problems. Being a student with a job that doesn’t pay that much didn’t allow me to be able to publish my own work. So I looked for a publisher. Another down; I couldn’t afford an agent! I was losing hope and patience until the ultimate ‘up’ showed. I found Bayou Brew Publishing!

They loved my work and wanted to publish it. My dreams came true and I couldn’t believe it. I never thought that this would happen because of me being from South Africa. I write stories that match the market place in overseas countries and am I just ecstatic that I was given the opportunity to have others read what I write.

The one ultimate ‘down’ I have is the fact that I sometimes wish I was in America or the UK so that I can attend author events and meet other amazing writers. I miss out on so much! But I am confident that one day I will be able to travel the world and see all these awesome events and meet other authors.

Because of BBP and my amazing support team, I now have fans from around the globe and now even here in South Africa. It was an awesome moment to become an official author and I am still experiencing it. Seeing that I can achieve my dreams has pushed me to the limits and I am now thinking of publishing a novel right here in my home country. I am so excited and can’t wait to see what the future holds for me!
